If you are like most people, your life is probably in a rut. You do the same things every day. Life has become a routine to most people. After all, we live in a fast paced, business oriented society where we are burning our candles at both ends. By the time most people are in their 30s, they feel like they have reached the end of their potential.

Here’s the thing: Life is more than that. Life is a journey. Life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved.

Jesus Christ offers us a fullness, a richness of life that can only come from the author of life itself. “I came so that they may have life and have it to the fullest” (John 10:10).

Christ offers us this life: He does not force it on us. The choice is ours to make.
I can say:

“Jesus, I don't trust Your offer of life.
I
don't think You can change my life.
I
don't believe what You say about baptism and communion.
I
don't want to be involved with Your Church or change my way of doing things.
I'II stay right where I am.”

or I can say:

“Jesus, I don't fully understand Your offer of life, but I trust You.
I hear You knocking at the door of my heart and I want You to come in.
Because I accept that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,
I accept what You say about baptism and communion.
I accept how You
identify Yourself with Your Church and commit myself to it.
Work in me by Your
Holy Spirit to change me into a sharer of
Your glory.”

At Holy Dormition, we experience this life and the presence of the One who gives it constantly through our community, but particularly through the Sacramental Mysteries. The incense we use is not just “bells and smells,” but an experience of prayer and God’s presence with us. The incense has a way to get in your eyes and make things “fuzzy,” a reminder that before the mystery of God, all of us are humbled. As St. Paul proclaims:

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known (1 Cor 13:2).

That, after all, is the goal of our whole lives: to know God as fully and we are known. To become united to God in a way that we will share in His glory and, ultimately, in His divinity, through His grace.

As Byzantine Catholics, our ways have come down to us from the very first Christians who lived in the Holy Land. We came here with few material goods, but with the treasure of this ancient Christian Tradition.

We invite you to share this treasure and in it to discover the life Christ offers us,
to come and experience that life and mystery of being fully known by the marvelous God who made you and sustains you.
